DeWitt County finance committee weighs ending uniform pay scale as FY26 budget work begins

Committee members debated whether to retain the years-of-service pay scale for nonunion staff or allow department heads to propose specific salary levels for their offices.
Claro Carter said department heads should "show what salary they want for their staff," while Terry Ferguson suggested the committee could set a general cap or ask for reduced requests from departments. Dee Rentmeister, County Administrator, cautioned the committee that doing away with a uniform pay scale "could result in a lot of issues/conflicts between departments" and said any change would require department-level figures as soon as possible so the committee can evaluate affordability.
