NAACP requests Peekskill street closures for Oct. 20 domestic-violence awareness walk

City Clerk Cassandra Redd presented a street-closure application from the NAACP to hold a domestic-violence awareness walk on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024.
Redd said the proposed route starts at Nelson Avenue, proceeds to Central Avenue, turns left onto Water Street and ends at the Hudson Avenue intersection, with lineup at 4:00 p.m. and a ceremony at the riverfront gazebo to "celebrate the survivors of domestic violence" and to provide education and stigma reduction. "They have submitted an application to hold a walk for domestic violence to bring awareness and education on 10/20/2024 from 4 to 8," Redd said. Staff said a meeting with the organizer, the chief, and city staff is scheduled to discuss concerns and the most cost‑effective way to hold the event.
Council members asked whether a march could remain on sidewalks to reduce costs; staff said they will include that option in the meeting and return to the council with details and, if the organizer wishes to proceed, a resolution next week.
