DeWitt County adopts ordinance raising select sheriff’s service fees

The DeWitt County Board on April 24 adopted an ordinance raising several fees charged by the sheriff’s office, including the serving fee from $60 to $85 and eviction standby from $25 to $65. The motion, moved by Myers and seconded by Werts, passed with all ten board members present voting aye.
Sheriff Walker told the board a recent cost study examined increases in expenses such as insurance and fuel and recommended higher fees to help recoup service costs. Walker asked members to approve the ordinance; county Administrator Carter said the study supported the change. The board recorded the increases for Certified Mail Process Service ($45 to $60) and fingerprinting ($20 to $25) as part of the same ordinance. Walker also said he did not view the change as “a moneymaker” but a cost-recovery step.
The ordinance replaces fee levels last updated in 2012 or 2013, when the serving fee rose from $20 to $60. The board voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance; the county will incorporate the new fees into sheriff-office billing and scheduling practices going forward.
