Mayor flags cemetery maintenance request and county shelter infrastructure needs

During administrative reports, Mayor Tracy Rodes said the Webster Cemetery Board sent a letter requesting town funding for cemetery maintenance in the upcoming budget cycle. The mayor asked the board to consider the request as the FY 2025-26 budget is developed.
Rodes also noted WLOS news coverage regarding HERE’s request for $500,000 from Jackson County Commissioners to purchase the Soil & Water Conservation District’s former daycare building in Savannah; she said she has requested a conversation with County Manager Kevin King to discuss infrastructure needs to support a shelter for 30–40 people, including public transit, sidewalks and additional law enforcement. Commissioners did not vote on funding at the Feb. 5 meeting; the items were raised for future budget and intergovernmental discussion.
Commissioner Collins reported that NCDOT repaired a collapsing turn on North River Road and said he will follow up with county staff about a proposed crosswalk in front of the old school. These items were recorded as informational and for follow-up rather than actions taken at the meeting.
