VDOT: Amelia sidewalk project advances despite $294,000 funding deficit; bridge geotech work underway

VDOT staff updated the board on maintenance and construction activities in Amelia County, reporting surface treatment work has begun and that the contractor will place loose gravel signs and later sweep excess stone. The first phase of the county sidewalk project began and has a fixed completion deadline of January 2026.
VDOT said the sidewalk project is carrying a deficit of approximately $294,000 based on updated estimates; staff are coordinating with the transportation alternatives program (TAP) manager to seek additional TAP funding to cover the shortfall and noted the deficit will not delay the public hearing process. District bridge partners are conducting geotechnical work at Namazene Road where a bridge has been identified for replacement in a future year; traffic studies and speed study locations (including Route 656 / South Amelia Avenue) were also reported as underway.
