Residents ask Harvey County to change fireworks ban so Burrton-area stand can open

During public comment, Michelle Green and Arianna Hoskinson asked the Harvey County Commission to revisit Resolution 2015-8 so they could place a fireworks stand just outside the Burrton city limits. The speakers told the board they could not get a permit under current county policy and said the stand would be the only one serving the Burrton area. They stressed urgency because "orders from distributors need to be placed by April 30." The board agreed to review the request with staff and legal counsel and to add discussion of fireworks regulations to a future meeting agenda.
Planning Director Karen Rothe later explained that, while a conditional use permit might ordinarily be considered by the planning commission, the county resolution banning fireworks sales overrides planning regulations and therefore a permit would not authorize sales unless the board changes the resolution or policy. Commissioners did not take immediate action but scheduled the matter for further consideration.
