The program would require about eight hours of classroom time plus out‑of‑class assignments; graduates would receive teaching materials and could adapt content to local cultural and geographic needs.
Herrelson said a Certified Nurse Midwife at Kaiser has agreed to participate and that continuing education credits would be available through the American College of Nurse Midwives. She reported the provider’s cost to stand up the program is $1,200 (the market value for the cohort was cited as $6,000) and that the provider could "start the program as soon as May 2026." The TIG noted difficulty recruiting participants from Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i; UH Mānoa may have funding available if participants join a research study. Members discussed payment-structure options and timing for launch at the Hawai‘i Midwife Conference in August 2026.
