The Webster Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution April 2 opposing locating gas stations along the Tuckasegee River after hearing public concerns about flood risk and permitting transparency. Resident Julie VanLeuven and ETJ resident Kate McKittrick urged the board to require more careful planning, stricter permitting and greater public engagement for the proposed gas station on NC 107 near South River Road.
Commissioner Dale Collins presented the town’s drafted resolution opposing riverside gas stations, citing habitat protection, tourism impacts and traffic-safety concerns at the NC 107/South River Road intersection. Dr. Rob Young, a licensed geologist, advised the board about current flood-map zone limitations and urged updated mapping tools. The board asked Mayor Rodes to invite county officials (named in discussion) to explain permitting and to clarify why public hearings were not held for the proposal; the board then approved the edited resolution by motion of Commissioner Brandon Core, seconded by Commissioner Leigh Anne Young.
