County: geotechnical, environmental checks clear way for public‑safety tower; road design next

Joey Webb Jr., Haywood County's chief information officer, told commissioners the geotechnical report for the long‑planned public‑safety radio tower has returned with no issues and that agency environmental surveys did not find the elktoe mussel or the expected bat species. "I'm pleased to say that we got the geotechnical report back and everything came back, without any issues," Webb said, adding that a small botanical survey also found no specimens requiring additional mitigation.
Webb said preliminary site and road drawings have been approved, and final plans are in for completion. Once the final road plans are approved the county will advertise bids for road construction and then finalize tower design and antenna‑loading analysis. Webb described coverage maps that show improved service for Lake Logan, Highway 110 and parts of Bethel and North Canton, and said local contractors will be used where possible. He also reported carrier interest in co‑location but said no binding agreements are yet in place.
