The Haywood County Board of Commissioners on May 5 unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing May 2025 as National Treatment Court Month.
Judge Leslie read the proclamation to the board, citing national treatment-court statistics and claimed cost savings. "Whereas treatment courts save an average of more than $6,000 for every individual they serve," the proclamation said. After the reading, Commissioner (speaker 7) moved to approve the proclamation and the board voted aye; the chair called the vote unanimous.
Amanda, the county's Adult Accountability and Recovery Court program coordinator, updated commissioners on the local program. "We started our recovery court in 2023, and we are now at our current capacity with 15 participants," she said, adding that the court already has graduates and a waiting list. Commissioners asked where participants receive treatment; Amanda said most go to Meridian and some to Behavioral Health Group in Clyde, with some inpatient placements in Buncombe County.
The proclamation and the program update were welcomed by commissioners, who praised recovery-court results and emphasized second-chance approaches for people with substance use disorders.
