Commission hires bookkeeper, appoints library member and approves community event funding

The commission hired Angela Barrickman as main bookkeeper for the County Clerk's Office, appointed Sherry Daetwyler to the Helvetia Public Library board and approved funding requests including $2,500 to the Fraternal Order of Police Christmas party, $5,000 to the Tygart Valley Wrestling Federation, $3,300 to the CVB and $5,000 to the Randolph County Batting Cages.
At its Nov. 7 session the Randolph County Commission approved a personnel hire and several community funding requests.
County Clerk Brenda Wiseman asked the commission to hire Angela Barrickman as main bookkeeper effective Nov. 7, 2024 at a starting wage of $19.45 per hour with full benefits and a 90-day probationary period; the commission approved the hire unanimously. The commission also appointed Sherry Daetwyler to fill an unexpired term on the Helvetia Public Library board through July 30, 2027.
On community funding, the commission approved a $2,500 donation from coal severance funds to the Fraternal Order of Police Seneca Trail Lodge #104 for its Dec. 14 Christmas party (the group reported more than $37,700 in donations last year and about 240 local children served). The commission approved $5,000 from Hotel/Motel tax funds to the Tygart Valley Wrestling Federation to support events that have drawn up to about 500 people in previous shows, and $3,300 to the County Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote bus tours. Commissioners also approved a $5,000 Hotel/Motel tax contribution to Randolph County Batting Cages for ceiling repairs and safety upgrades that the group's president said are needed to protect a 10,000 sq. ft. training facility.
Speakers emphasized tourism and youth-development benefits when discussing the funding requests.
