911 center reports outage; clerk announces absentee ballot deadlines and public test date

911/OEM Director Michael Miller reported a Sept. 27 power outage at the 911 Center that forced 20 minutes on battery backup and noted ongoing roof leaks; County Clerk Brenda Wiseman said roughly 180 absentee ballot requests have been mailed, the last day to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 30, and a public test of voting equipment is set for Oct. 18.
During the Oct. 3 meeting, 911/OEM Director Michael Miller reported that high winds on Sept. 27 caused a power loss at the 911 Center. "For some reason when the power went out it did not transfer to the generator so they had to run on battery backup for about 20 minutes," Miller said. He added that Mountaineer Generator service manually started the generator, several breakers tripped, there was a smell of burnt wiring from the plotter but no damage found, HVAC vendor Casto Technical was engaged, and roof leaks at the 911 Center remain under repair by Duarte's Roofing.
Sheriff Robert Elbon also briefed the Commission on a planned purchase of two portable license-plate readers; he said portable units cost about $6,000 and use a SIM card and the county will use Opioid Funds for the purchase.
County Clerk Brenda Wiseman gave an elections update: the clerk's office has mailed approximately 180 absentee ballots, "the last day someone can request an absentee ballot is October 30th," and the public test of voting equipment is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 10:00 a.m. Early voting will run Oct. 23 through Nov. 2 at both locations.
