Staff seeks consultant to draft park sustainability plan using Rescape principles

Staff told the commission the city intends to issue an RFP to hire a consultant to develop a sustainability management plan for parks and open spaces. The proposed approach would use Rescape (formerly Bay‑Friendly) principles, focus on climate‑adaptive species, irrigation efficiency and long‑term landscape management, and include an inventory of park assets.
"Our preliminary idea right now is to base our 1st approach using Rescape principles," staff said, adding that the plan would help the city manage more than 50 acres of parks, medians and civic landscapes and provide demonstrable practices residents could follow in residential yards. Commissioners suggested supplementing that work by consulting experts in biological systems and reviewing plans used by other small cities as models.
Staff said the sustainability RFP will follow the irrigation RFP and that they will return to the commission with more details as the consultant is engaged.
