The Randolph County Commission voted on Sept. 19 to pay $19,571.75 to the Internal Revenue Service from coal‑severance funds for unpaid Whitmer Water Association taxes, contingent on receiving the formal IRS demand letter specifying the amount.
A representative from the City of Elkins told the commission the county had not yet received the IRS letter. Commissioner David Kesling said he and Administrative Assistant Melinda Lott had spoken with the IRS and were told $19,571.75 was the amount due and that figure would be valid through Oct. 25; Kesling moved to pay that amount pending receipt of the letter. He also said the State Tax Department had indicated $7,591.68 was owed to the state and that matter would be discussed at a future meeting.
The motion passed unanimously and county staff will process the conditional payment if and when the IRS demand letter is received.
