Council picks brick-forward option for Alpine Fire Station exterior after donor and planning input

Donor Don Watkins told the council he and several residents supported the original concept and expressed frustration with late changes, saying, "You got baited and switched," while other residents and council members argued a more brick-forward approach would set a historic tone for Main Street. Planning and structural staff cautioned that heavier brick could require additional lateral / structural work on existing apparatus bays, which could alter cost estimates.
After discussion the council moved to approve Option 2 (increased brick, no faux wood) with the motion carried in roll-call voting. Staff and the architect will coordinate structural checks and value-engineering to address a GMP overage before final contract adjustments.
Next steps: staff to work with architect/contractor on structural implications, seek ways to reduce cost overruns, and return any necessary change orders to the council for approval.
