The board heard a first reading of revised Board Policy 6146.11 on alternative credits toward graduation. Assistant Superintendent Ariel Dolowich explained the update standardizes practice across Millennium and Piedmont High School and adds clear guardrails intended to encourage dual enrollment while protecting the integrity of the PHS transcript.
Staff distinguished dual enrollment (often governed by a CCAP agreement or MOU with a community college, typically taught on-site or by a community-college instructor) from concurrent enrollment (a student takes courses at a community college but remains enrolled at their high school). The proposed guardrails require prior administrative approval for outside courses, limit students to a maximum of four outside courses across grades 9–12 and to no more than two outside courses in one year, and require counselors and department chairs to vet course equivalency and legitimacy.
Trustees asked about implementation and messaging; staff said counselors will be involved in outreach, the district will compile a vetted list of preapproved institutions on a public website, and existing exemption language in the graduation policy will cover special circumstances. The board moved to place the policy on future agendas for second reading after additional vetting.
