Pedestrian bridge fabrication delayed; staff weighing wet-season options

Staff reported that the Proposition 68-funded pedestrian bridge contract for Piedmont Park has been awarded and the bridge is currently being fabricated off-site.
"They're given us a schedule that has told us... the bridge will not arrive until February," the consultant said, adding that demo and abutment work will take roughly one month and that staff are evaluating options because delivery may fall during the rainy season. The consultant described two options: perform demolition and abutment work early and crane the fabricated bridge into place later to limit wetland disturbance, or wait until after the rainy season and perform demolition and installation then, which would likely push the bridge back into May before it is back in service.
Commissioners heard that several logistical and environmental factors (fabrication schedule, weather, and wetland protections) influence when and how the work will be staged. Staff said they will continue working with the contractor to refine the schedule and minimize impacts to riparian areas.
