The Vernon County Finance Committee voted Feb. 19 to forward a resolution to the full county board authorizing a $130,000 general-fund loan to the solid waste department to finance additional test well installation and monitoring tied to the county's landfill expansion application.
The motion, made by Supv John Pedretti and seconded by Supv Charlie Jacobson, instructed staff to "draft a resolution authorizing a $130,000 general fund loan to the solid waste department for additional testing, and forward to the full board with a recommendation for approval." On a voice vote, all members present voted in favor and the motion carried. Solid waste Director Stacie Sanborn told the committee the additional engineering, sampling, and drilling contractor work would cost $130,000.00 to satisfy the Department of Natural Resources' request for more information after the initial expansion submission was deemed incomplete.
Supv John Pedretti asked whether the county might face further testing costs down the line and sought assurance about total exposure. Cassie Hanan, who manages county finance operations, said the county is obligated to provide the information the DNR needs for its determination, indicating the estimates were those currently available to staff.
The resolution will be drafted for consideration by the full county board; the committee did not set a repayment schedule in the discussion recorded in the minutes.
