Templeton residents say county diverts their library tax dollars; board to convene library subcommittee

Christina Lee of the Templeton Community Library Association told the Board of Supervisors Sept. 9 that Templeton residents have paid a 1.6% property-tax allocation for county library services for decades but that the community library receives none of those funds. "Each year, the county collects 1.6 percent of Templeton property tax revenue for library services, but none of these funds come back to support the library our residents built," Lee said, asking the county to negotiate a tax agreement to direct the money to the Templeton Community Services District to support the locally operated library.

Lee said Templeton residents have subsidized the county's 14 other branches for roughly 45 years while the Templeton community rebuilt an all-donor-funded library. She estimated the redirected amount at about $318,000 annually ("about $318,000 dividing the library services budget among the 15 libraries"), and asked the board to consider the fiscally responsible step of directing local funds to the community'run library. Board members agreed to form a library subcommittee / ad hoc group and asked the CAO to work with the county library director to prepare a report and options for the full board.
