Health officer warns county about possible limits to COVID vaccine coverage; immunization grant explained

County Health Officer Penny Borenstein told supervisors Sept. 9 that federal decisions this fall may change who receives a COVID vaccine covered at no cost by insurers and urged the public to watch for ACIP recommendations expected Sept. 18'19.

Borenstein said the FDA has licensed a new vaccine formulation for people over age 65 and for those with underlying medical conditions, but that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) had not yet issued a recommendation for broader groups. "We do not yet have ACIP... recommendations for the coming year," she said, explaining that insurers cover vaccines that ACIP recommends under current law and that a narrower recommendation could leave many people without guaranteed coverage. Borenstein urged residents to consult the county public-health website FAQ and noted the department's ongoing community education, school collaboration and provider advisories. She also described a federal- and state-funded immunization promotion and delivery program item on the consent agenda that supports vaccine access, education and school outreach.

Supervisor Gibson suggested staff bring a fuller presentation to the board after the upcoming ACIP meeting; board members agreed. Borenstein said the county will continue vaccination work for eligible groups and provide updates to the board as guidance and funding situations evolve.
