Shelley, the recreation director, opened her report by noting staff changes and upcoming projects across Parks and Recreation. She said an introduction of the new aquatics supervisor has been pushed to September and that "Her name is Paula Cooper Tipton." She also announced that rec coordinator applications close Aug. 26 and interviews are expected to begin Sept. 5, after longtime staff member Akhil Dinjuma accepted a new position at Lighthouse Charter School.
Shelley highlighted recent outreach on the beach tot lot project and said staff will return in September with next steps after informational presentations to the park commission. She also reviewed an approved contract at the Aug. 19 city council meeting to resurface the pickleball courts and said the contractor is expected to have about 50 days to complete that work, with an estimated start in late September or early October. Commissioners pressed for detail on scope; Shelley said the resurfacing will remove problematic tree roots and that two trees will be removed where necessary, and confirmed the courts will be restriped for pickleball.
Why it matters: the scheduling and staff turnover affect program delivery this fall, while the court project will alter widely used facilities and requires coordination with user groups. The commission asked for follow‑up schedules and outreach plans so residents can plan around resurfacing.
