Assistant Superintendent Dr. Reese briefed the committee July 29 on a draft memorandum of agreement for fitness equipment the town of Townsend is donating to the district and said the rec department secured the grant that paid for the equipment.
Dr. Reese said the draft MOA identifies the district’s acceptance of the fitness court as a gift and specifies community access: "we're accepting the fitness sport as part of a gift from the town, with the opportunity for the community to be able to use the fitness court, and fitness studio outside of school hours." He told the board the town had given preliminary approval through its recreation department and the agreement still needed a vote by the town’s board of selectmen.
The committee approved three separate motions related to the gift: accepting the gift pursuant to General Laws Chapter 71, Section 37A; entering into the memorandum of agreement with the town; and authorizing the chair to execute the MOA on the committee’s behalf. Michael LeBossier moved the first motion (Lisa Bloom seconded); Michael LeBossier moved the second and Chris Sloan seconded; LeBossier moved the third and Chris Sloan seconded. Each motion passed on roll call 5–1; Jackie White voted no on all three.
Committee members thanked Dr. Reese for leading negotiations and noted the quick turnaround from conception to drafting the MOA. The motions require the town to finalize its internal approvals before the agreement goes into effect.
