Design Review Committee recommends deck replacement at 45 Dorset Hollow Rd

The Dorset Design Review Committee on May 18 recommended that the Planning Commission approve a proposal to remove and replace a 20' x 20' deck and railing over the west-side garage at 45 Dorset Hollow Rd.
Applicant Nicholas Raeburn told the committee the project is limited to the deck and railing; no other work is proposed. He said the existing TREX decking (about 20 years old) will be replaced with red balau hardwood and that the balustrades will be copper no larger than 3/4" in diameter. "There is no maintenance to speak of for copper – it weathers to a soft patina," Raeburn said. He added the railing height will increase to 36 inches from the current 27 inches to address safety concerns.
Raeburn described the proposed railing construction as a 2" x 6" cedar top, a 2" x 4" middle board and a 1" x 4" bottom board; a drawing was submitted with the application. The committee cited applicable design guidance under 2203.L (Construction components, porches and decks) when considering compatibility with the building's style.
Ruth Tanenhaus moved to accept the application as presented; Jane Kennedy seconded the motion and the committee voted to recommend approval unanimously. Chair Kit Wallace reminded applicants that the DRC issues recommendations only and that the Planning Commission issues final permits; a 15-day appeal period follows Planning Commission approval.
