The Cumberland County commissioners approved a $250,000 grant from the Susquehanna River Basin Commission to preserve farmland in areas with high groundwater recharge. "This grant will be used to preserve farmland in areas that have high groundwater recharge," Planning Department staffer Stephanie Williams told the board, adding the funds will be funneled through the county's existing farmland preservation program.
Williams said the award will allow the county to extend existing preservation funds and protect water supplies. The board moved and seconded the measure and voted in favor. Commissioners were told the award will be administered through current county-state farmland-preservation processes and that the money is intended to increase the number of parcels preserved under the program.
