Resident asks Smyth County to get VDOT to explain surveillance cameras

A Smyth County resident used the citizen-comment period to ask the board to seek information from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) about surveillance cameras operating in parts of the county.
"I think the citizens have a right to know what kind of cameras are up and what their purpose is, whether they're operational," the resident said, adding questions about where footage is kept and how long it is retained. The resident asked whether data are retained "indefinitely or for 3 weeks" and whether the systems store anything beyond license-plate data.
Board members acknowledged the request and said they would ask the relevant agency for details and invite a report back at a future meeting or the county's quarterly report. Staff and other members referenced VA511 as a place where some camera feeds or traffic information can be viewed, and pledged follow-up with transportation officials.
