The Smyth County Board of Supervisors opened its Jan. 8 organizational meeting by selecting leadership for 2026, confirming nominations and moving through routine organizational business.
During nominations for chairman, a member put forward Charlie Atkins for the role. "I'd like to nominate Charlie Atkins," the member said, and the board proceeded to close nominations and vote. The motion carried by voice vote and Atkins continued as chairman for 2026. The board also handled nominations for vice chair and clerk; Sean was nominated to serve as clerk and that nomination was approved.
Board members praised staff and outgoing leadership during the roll call and took turns expressing thanks for responsiveness to constituents. The board's procedural actions — selecting officers and confirming staff roles — were completed as the first order of business at the meeting.
