Chief reports staffing on track, Station 20 nearing completion after recent responses

At the Ross Valley Fire Department Board meeting on May 13, 2026, Fire Chief Mahoney reported the department expects two firefighter-paramedics "due to start June 1 and before July 1, which would bring the department to fully staffed." He said no employees are currently out on injury.
Chief Mahoney outlined facilities work: Fire Station 20’s remodel is expected to be completed by the end of May with landscaping finished by the end of summer, and Fire Station 21’s remodel is moving along with fire staff scheduled to move into temporary quarters next week. He also summarized recent incident activity, saying the department responded to four fires — one in Fairfax, two in San Rafael and one in San Anselmo — and to a vehicle accident involving a garbage truck, a pedestrian and a parked car.
Director Hellman raised community feedback about traffic impacts in Fairfax during one of the fires and asked why a Nixle notification did not go out; Chief Mahoney and Executive Officer Donery agreed to discuss roles and cross-agency notification processes with coordinating agencies and to report back in a future chief’s report. There was no public comment during the meeting.
