The Cordele City Commission opened a public hearing on July 30 on the proposed FY2027 budget, which a commissioner presented as "$22,295,934." Mayor (speaker 1) said the plan currently is short on revenue by roughly $2,295,000 and that commissioners must balance services with fiscal constraints.
A finance staff member, Miss Sonia, told the commission auditors and consultants are "projecting to around 20,000,000" in receipts for 2026, below the proposed spending level. Commissioners said they plan quarterly budget reviews to monitor receipts and avoid abrupt service cuts.
The mayor emphasized the need to spread costs across revenue sources, including sales taxes and fees, rather than targeting a single group of residents. The commission set a date to adopt the budget at a called meeting on Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. and asked the public to inspect the budget document at the Office of the Finance Director during normal business hours.
