During the public-comment portion and in-session remarks, residents urged the court to give the public fuller information about costs and petition consequences and pressed that voters be given a chance to decide major economic-development projects.
Staff provided an example to illustrate homeowner impact: for a $300,000 home, the county's estimate was about $5.25 a month in additional taxes under the proposal discussed. County staff and residents clarified that senior homestead exemptions and county tax ceilings can limit increases for qualifying residents age 65 and older. Public speakers with long local experience urged caution over petitions and COs because of their potential to delay and complicate large capital projects.
Quote: "A $300,000 home... would raise that particular individual's taxes $5.25 a month," staff said while explaining homestead and senior exemption effects.
