City administrator outlines street, water and alley projects; announces potential Amazon Prime Air launch

City Administrator Derrick Champion told the Council on Jan. 7 that major infrastructure projects and community improvements are underway or planned for 2026.
Champion listed projects including improvements to St. Louis Avenue, Lawndale Avenue, Sawyer Avenue and the east side of Market Street, replacement of water mains and lead service lines, neighborhood lighting projects, and new signage and curb/sidewalk improvements along Dixie Highway and business areas. He said the City is pursuing Metropolitan Water Reclamation District grants for alley and stormwater improvements and plans demolition of at least five homes along 159th and Sawyer Streets as preparation for future projects.
Champion also told the Council that Markham is scheduled for Amazon Prime Air drone delivery service with a potential launch at the end of April; the City plans a public event so residents can learn about the service and view the drones. He presented these items as part of a broader focus on infrastructure, business development and community improvements for 2026.
