Markham wins $245,000 Cook County water-affordability award; sewer and lighting projects move ahead

City Administrator Derrick Champion told the council the city was awarded $245,000 under the Cook County Water Affordability Program to target meter replacement, study and facilitate resident leak reporting, and provide education for residents and staff. "We have a kick-off meeting with their team this coming Friday," he said.
Champion also reported a single bid was received for the MWRD Green Alley Phase II project (which the council later approved), the city's pre-application for continuing the alley program to MWRD was accepted, and Cook County grant programs (Invest in Cook and CDBG) are open with staff preparing applications. He said bids are due Feb. 11, 2026 for the combined-sewer replacement on Wolcott Avenue (161st–163rd), funded via Cook County climate-resilience funding.
Additionally, Champion said all conduits and foundations are complete for the Neighborhood Lighting project but the city awaits delivery of poles and luminaires from the manufacturer. The report included timelines for next steps and anticipated construction scheduling with funders.
