Council appoints Kevin Triplett fire chief effective Jan. 1, 2026

The Montrose City Council unanimously voted to appoint Kevin Triplett as the city's fire chief, with the appointment effective Jan. 1, 2026 and running through Dec. 2027.
Council member (mover) presented the motion and Mayor seconded; the motion passed on a recorded voice vote of 5-0. Council members congratulated Triplett after the vote.
Triplett, who addressed the council during the department's activity report, described the department's emergency procedures and mutual-aid role: "We're gonna mitigate the initial issues and stuff, and then, we do have an emergency operations plan ... and we would rely on mutual aid partners and the county to assist us in the overall mitigation of it," he said. He also confirmed the fire-department job description is in the department policy manual and that the chief reports to the city administrator.
Council members also discussed whether the council should institute regular performance reviews for the fire chief. One council member recommended personnel committee begin work on an annual review process; the mayor said the committee would coordinate with city administration.
The appointment follows staff discussion earlier in the meeting about recruiting and retention tools and the role of the city in administering retirement benefits for firefighters.
