Parents and staff urge board to recognize superintendent's contributions; trustees seek follow-up

During the open-comment period on April 15, several parents, staff and community members urged the Rio School District board to acknowledge contributions by Dr. Puglisi during his leave and to provide information about supports for students.

Trustee Eleanor Torres relayed a parent's request to recognize Dr. Puglisi's contributions and summarized programmatic highlights, saying the district had seen "the expansion of arts and music programs, the development of project-based learning and dual immersion schools, long-term financial stability, successful bond measures, and strong academic and extracurricular programs." Trustee Kristine Anderson acknowledged community frustration about personnel matters while stressing that those matters are confidential by law and that programs continue to operate due to staff efforts.

Public commenters included a long list of residents and stakeholders who spoke during the allotted public-comment time. Trustee Emmanuel Mejia asked staff to provide follow-up on the public comments and to share information about actions being taken to support students; Trustee Alesia Martin asked for additional information on the Catalyst Program for further review.
