Village says DEC will conduct additional mercury testing; DOH reports no known immediate health concerns
Summary
Administrator reported that New York State DEC will perform additional soil, groundwater and vapor testing in response to prior EPA work, with an expected sampling program this summer and a year or two for final reporting; DOH indicated no known immediate surface health concerns but the village requested written confirmation for residents.
During the administrator’s report, staff summarized a meeting with the DEC and Department of Health concerning follow‑up mercury testing at sites previously addressed by EPA. The DEC plans to send a full work plan and community notice and indicated at minimum it expects to perform 10 soil samples and four subsurface water and sediment samples as part of the additional investigation.
“We asked the Department of Health ... and they said they’re not aware of anything that's an immediate concern or anything on the surface that's an immediate health concern,” Chris reported, but he also said the village requested that assurance in writing to share with residents. The administrator said sampling could begin in August and take about 45 days of collection with several weeks for testing, and that a final report could take one to two years.
Staff urged residents to review any access agreements and encouraged cooperation to ensure comprehensive testing; the village will post a project web page and updated community notice when the DEC provides a formal plan.
