Smyth County adopts FY27 water and sewer rate ordinance effective July 1, 2026

The Smyth County Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance on June 18 setting fixed charges and volume charges for water and sewer service to be effective July 1, 2026. The ordinance follows a rate study completed with assistance from Davenport & Company and was considered after a duly noticed May 21 public hearing.
Appendix A, adopted with the ordinance, lists the FY27 rate schedule: residential water minimum bill $28.96 with tiered per‑1,000‑gallon charges ($12.55 for 1,001–6,000 gallons; $15.44 for 6,001 and over); commercial and industrial minimums and tiered charges are specified in the schedule. Residential sewer shows a $30.34 minimum and tiered per‑1,000‑gallon charges; a $67.14 residential flat rate is noted for some customers. The Board voted to approve the ordinance following staff presentation and the motion passed unanimously.
Board members discussed the county’s goal of managing utility funds to eliminate debt and improve fund margins; Rye Valley District Supervisor W. Jason Parris specifically spoke in favor of reducing county debt and strengthening water and sewer fund margins. The ordinance renders previous rate ordinances null and void and directs staff to implement the new schedule effective July 1.
