The Board reviewed a draft ordinance to provide tax relief for eligible emergency services volunteers and voted to schedule a public hearing July 9 to consider adding Chapter 23, Article XVII to the Smyth County Code.
County Administrator Shawn Utt said the proposed framework mirrors a program in Tazewell County and would allow a maximum credit of $300 per volunteer. The ordinance includes an eligibility standard requiring volunteers to participate in at least 25% of annual calls, trainings or departmental activities. Assistant County Administrator – Development Clegg Williams suggested clarifying that the 25% threshold applies to departmental activities across the full calendar year; the committee agreed to add that language.
The Board’s committee recommendation to schedule a July 9 hearing was moved by Supervisor Charlie Atkins and seconded by Kris Ratliff; it was adopted unanimously.
