Smyth County schedules June 18 hearing on $5.002 million budget amendment

The Smyth County Board of Supervisors voted June 11 to schedule a public hearing for June 18 to consider Budget Amendment #7, a $5,002,000 package of revenues and expenditures.
County Administrator Shawn Utt presented the amendment to the Board and said the amendment includes $2,000 in grant funding for the Commonwealth Attorney’s junior attorney program and the remainder is intended for various Smyth County School Board items. Julie Bear, Director of Finance for Smyth County Schools, told the Board that the revenues and expenses reflect state-funded support for virtual students, lower dual-enrollment costs and additional ESSER reimbursements.
The Board’s committee recommendation to set a June 18 public hearing was moved by Supervisor Courtney Widener and seconded by Vice Chair Mike Sturgill; it was approved unanimously. The hearing is required because the amendment exceeds 1% of the County’s annual budget.
