Board members pressed district staff on the purchasing agenda Tuesday, seeking clarity about large tuition line items tied to out-of-district special-education placements.
“Some of the numbers are pretty high,” a board member said, asking how many students were covered by the Alpha School line item and why the district sends students to other districts and private placements. A facilities/special-education staff member explained the district sometimes places students in outside public or private programs when in-district options are full or cannot meet a child’s needs.
Staff provided a rough count for out-of-district placements: “About a 130 students,” one administrator said, and noted per-placement costs in the packet. Another staff member described the cost impact in the packet as an estimate and said some line items in the purchasing list reflect drawdown-style payment schedules rather than single lump sums.
Board members said those figures help explain tight budget lines. “When people say we can trim, special-ed costs are through the roof,” one member said, urging the public and fellow members to understand the scale of placement and tuition costs. Staff said they would follow up with school-level counts and clearer dollar totals for interested board members.
