Amherst council debates appointing a single interim vs. staggered appointments amid candidate‑pool concerns

Council members discussed whether appointing a single person to serve until certification after the Nov. 2027 election would discourage potential candidates, or whether a two‑stage approach (short interim appointment followed by a fuller recruitment) would be preferable.

One council member noted that serving only a one‑year remainder can deter potential candidates: "Like, when I ran for, you know, a 1 year remainder of someone's term... I talked to other folks and said, ah, it's not worth it. I'm not gonna run this year because it's only for a year," a council member said in describing how short remaining terms affect candidate interest. Others argued appointing someone already on the ballot could provide continuity and that a more open recruitment could be run later for a January appointment. Staff outlined options that would allow the council to solicit applications in November and hold interviews in December and January if the council chooses that path.

The council did not finalize a perennial‑term rule but voted to proceed with the staff timeline and to nominate Ventress Gibson for the immediate appointment while planning a broader recruitment and appointment process in the months ahead.
