NEK Waste fee increases outlined; Sutton member says town felt the change was unfair

Adam Bruggeman, Sutton's NEK Waste District representative, summarized a letter from Executive Director Christian Thompson informing member towns of fee increases and new charges for items that had been free in the past.
"Adam voted against it for 2 reasons, because Sutton pays per capita; and for the amount the fees will be going up," the minutes record. Bruggeman said the cost to dispose of large items such as mattresses is high, and that higher fees can leave residents with limited options and increase illegal dumping that towns must later remediate.
The board did not have the authority to change district policy at the meeting; Bruggeman said the new management was attempting to balance district budgets and that Sutton's representation on the district will continue to raise town concerns about per-capita billing and fee impacts on small communities.
