Hermosa Beach district reports early gains from new K–2 mCLASS/DIBELS screenings

Dr. Wilde told trustees the district adopted mCLASS DIBELS this school year to comply with Senate Bill 114 and has run winter and spring screening rounds for kindergarten through second grade. "So just a reminder, Senate Bill 114 says that starting this school year, we all school districts have to screen for risk of reading difficulties in all grade in grades K, 1, and 2 no less than once a year," she said.
The superintendent said the district used screening results to provide roughly 10 weeks of intensive, progress‑monitored interventions for students identified at risk. Dr. Wilde highlighted improvement after those cycles: "and we got a 15% gain in kids above grade level is huge," she said, and noted about three kindergarten students opted out of testing. The district plans three administrations per year (fall, winter, spring) for grades 1–2 and will assess kindergarten in winter and spring; staff also proposed extending screening into grade 3 to support the goal of having students reading by third grade.
Trustees asked about parent understanding of reports and teacher training; Dr. Wilde said the district chose mCLASS in part for its parent reporting features and that staff provided training and family events. She also emphasized that the screener is not a dyslexia diagnostic: students who remain unresponsive to interventions would receive additional assessments, including rapid automatized naming (RAN) and, if warranted, psychoeducational evaluation.
