S.D. DOT wins $65 million federal grant for SD44 Platte–Winner bridge replacement

Secretary Joel Jundt told the Commission that the Department of Transportation "was selected as a recipient of a $65 million grant via the Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP)" for the SD44 Platte–Winner bridge replacement project. Jundt said that combined with $25 million in congressional directed spending secured by Senators Thune and Rounds, the Department has sufficient funding to plan to let the replacement project later this fall.
Jundt explained the CHBP award uses a bridge-bundling approach to group small rural-bridge projects for funding; the Platte–Winner award is bundled with a Douglas County structure northwest of Armour on 280th Street. The program focuses on replacing and rehabilitating bridges in rural communities (defined in the program as areas with fewer than 115 people per square mile). The Commission received the update as part of the Secretary's report; no formal vote was required on the grant announcement.
