Commission splits over whether to require design professionals for design-review seats

Commissioners revisited a prior discussion about whether to mandate design expertise for members of the Village Design Advisory Committee (VDAC) or the Development Review Board (DRB). One commissioner (S9) argued for stronger language or minimum professional seats on the board, saying that without some required expertise the level of review the community expects may be lost. "I think there does need to be, you know, voting, design expertise somewhere in the chain," the commissioner said.
Other members counseled caution about hard mandates. One commissioner (S4) asked, "What if they are unable to stop that? Do we stop development?" and opposed requirements that could impede permitting or raise costs. The group agreed to forward the concern to trustees in a cover letter and recommended that commissioners and staff raise the point during trustee hearings rather than lock board composition into the bylaws, since appointment authority lies with trustees and bylaws may not be the proper place to prescribe detailed membership rules.
