Board approves temporary food-service staffing contract after public questions

At the July 27 meeting the board approved a discretionary contract with a staffing agency to supply temporary food-service workers for the district’s cafeterias.
An administrator described the purpose as filling short-term absences that affect meal preparation and serving times; the administration said the vendor would be used only when the district requests help and would not be used to replace permanently employed staff. "The contract has been reviewed by the human resource department, by legal, and the staffing agency will only provide employees when we reach out to them," the presenter said.
Public commenters and one trustee pressed the administration on several points: whether the contract’s broad language (which lists janitorial and custodial roles) implied a larger outsourcing plan, if unions were consulted, and whether use of the vendor could undercut career classifications and workplace safety. Legal counsel and staff said collective-bargaining agreements cover specifics about replacements and that using the vendor is an option only when needed.
The board approved the contract by roll call, 6 yeas to 1 nay. Doctor Jeanette McCullough recorded the lone no vote.
