Council names giant sequoia at McLean Park a heritage tree

Parks staff presented a nomination for a giant sequoia at McLean Park to be added to the city’s heritage‑tree list. Parks staff said the arborist’s evaluation scored the tree at 450 points—well above the 180‑point threshold for designation—and noted the tree’s estimated age (about 80–90 years), height (more than 100 feet), crown spread (approximately 57 feet) and circumference (about 27 feet).
Parks staff explained the heritage‑tree program (established in 1993 under municipal tree code section 8.710), the evaluation criteria and the requirement for owner consent on private properties. The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board had recommended the McLean Park sequoia for designation; council moved, seconded and approved the nomination unanimously. Parks staff said a plaque would be prepared and a dedication planned during Arbor Month in April.
Council thanked staff for the nomination and indicated interest in expanding the program by encouraging homeowners to nominate eligible trees.
