Wilsonville’s SMART outlines free Route 10X service and plans to serve West Linn

Representatives from SMART (South Metro Area Regional Transit), owned by the city of Wilsonville, briefed the West Linn City Council on Feb. 10 about planned service expansions that would bring SMART routes into West Linn and link to Clackamas Town Center.
Dwight Bershear, SMART’s transit director, said the agency operates nine routes and provides fare-free service as a policy. “All of our service is free,” Bershear said. Diana Koechler, SMART’s transit operations manager, described a planned Route 10X (hot pink) that would connect the SMART transit center with Riverside, Riverside High School, a stop at 10th Street near McDonald’s in West Linn, Oregon Shopping Center (TriMet connections) and Clackamas Town Center. Koechler said staff aim for 30-minute headways during peak times and are working with partners to coordinate schedules.
Council members asked whether West Linn should join SMART’s service area or create local shuttles; SMART said those are policy choices for the two cities to make and pledged to coordinate on stops and communications. Councilors emphasized the importance of backfilling service gaps created by TriMet reductions and praised SMART’s workforce-oriented routing to employers such as Amazon.
