Resident urges guardrail after ditch erosion on 1150 West; highway staff to measure and report

Resident Debbie Honeycutt told commissioners she has raised safety concerns about erosion and a deteriorated culvert on 1150 West since 2023 and requested a guardrail to prevent vehicles from going down a steep bank.
Honeycutt said a farmer removed the culvert to gain access for equipment and that tree removal increased erosion; after heavy rain the bank was close to undermining the roadway. "All I asked for was a guardrail back in '23, and it still didn't happen," she said.
Highway staff said they will obtain the DOT design-graph used to determine guardrail warranting, take measurements on site and report back at the next meeting. Staff also indicated the county can install a guardrail even if the warrant graph does not strictly require it, balancing safety and the risk that guardrails themselves can become hazards when struck.
The board asked staff to return with the graph and measurements so commissioners can decide on installation at a future meeting.
