Student representatives highlight back-to-school success, new behavior programs and athletics

The Toms River Regional School District welcomed student representatives from its three high schools, who reported fresh starts, student-led initiatives and athletic successes as the 2024–25 year begins.
"For 13,000 kids on a bus...the first couple days, by far the smoothest transportation job our district has ever had," the presiding official said in opening remarks, and High School East student-body president Ryan Makom told the board that freshmen orientation and club sign-ups have energized student involvement. Makom highlighted athletics results, noting an 8–1 boys varsity soccer win and a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program: "Michael Paabo for being named as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program."
High School North representative Gabriela Costa described a new Mariner Medallions program to reward positive behaviors and encouraged attendance at school events, while High School South representative Sofia Sitta outlined spirit activities and the school's "kindness campaign." Sitta joked about a routine favorite—"Popcorn Fridays are back at the home of the Indian"—and urged families to support upcoming fundraisers and events. The board thanked the student representatives and dismissed them before beginning business for the evening.
