District narrows math adoption to two pilots after county review; teachers favor HMH and Imagine

District curriculum staff on June 16 outlined the math adoption process following the California State Board of Education’s November 2025 adoptions and recommended two pilot programs after teacher and advisory review.
Director of Curriculum Isabel Cervantes Babione described a yearlong review involving an instructional advisory team, county math fair attendance, teacher scorecards and district pilot selection. From about 64 adopted programs the district narrowed to eight, and then to two pilot recommendations—Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH Into Math) and Imagine Learning’s Imagine Math—based on bilingual availability, grade coverage, online accessibility, instructional quality and cost efficiency.
Cervantes Babione said pilot teams will include whole grade levels at participating sites (Lincoln, Loma Vista, Mission Park, University Park were named) and that the district will order materials, schedule training and complete module cycles for teacher review. Trustees asked for a fiscal comparison to Eureka (the current program) and staff said they would bring a contract cost breakdown and implementation timeline to the August meeting. "By the end of this week, pending your direction, we will have samples from the 2 programs displayed at the district office," she said.
