The council heard two-minute remarks from dozens of applicants seeking an interim seat. Applicants repeatedly emphasized a small set of priorities: maintaining public safety and adequate first-responder staffing, managing traffic and infrastructure capacity, and ensuring growth is balanced with preservation of parks and trails. Several applicants described volunteer work or professional experience relevant to these priorities, including emergency preparedness, education, business leadership and nonprofit service.
For example, Tara Bradshaw said she has ‘‘served as the chair for Draper City Community Engagement Committee for the last 4 years’’ and emphasized serving the most vulnerable; other applicants highlighted experience as small-business owners, attorneys, teachers, public-health officials and nonprofit leaders. Council members later referenced that range of backgrounds when defending their choice to appoint a candidate with prior local government experience.
